One Pair of Shoes With 2 Pairs of Socks
The shoes the Intoto women own are called “Kongo” in Amharic, and everyone in Ethiopia knows they are cheap, plastic shoes. They are especially slippery on wet roads. But, these are the only shoes they can afford. When our Operations Director, Kibreab (or “KB”), asked about how they handle wearing these shoes, they told him that Kongo shoes are the cause of many broken ankles and that it was very difficult. Many mothers shared with Kibreab their personal stories about their Kongo shoes. One mother recounted,
“There were times when just one of my shoes was falling apart. So, I threw that one out, and I wore only one shoe on one foot.”
Another mother said,
“There are so many days I wear two different shoes on my feet.”
All the women were so happy to talk to KB as he passed out a brand new pair of shoes and two pairs of clean socks to them, but they didn’t smile for any of the photos. Over and over, our photographer, Efo, asked them to smile, but they never seemed to understand what he was asking for them to do. When Efo asked why they weren’t smiling, they said they didn’t understand why he was asking. And why would they understand such a silly thing? They don’t ever have their photos taken like this in there city. Joy sometimes comes in the form of solemn thankful faces! KB took many pictures and put together a
video of his time together with them, which will soon be out on Live Out Hope’s new social media pages!
